Thousands of L.A. teachers face layoffs

Things are really glum out here in L.A. Like nothing anyone has seen before. Here's the L.A. Times headline from January 24th:

Superintendent announces that no teachers will lose their jobs this school year. But the decision will boost next year's deficit.

  1. Prospects for school reform under these conditions aren't too good. Are they?

  2. I thought firing teachers at random was an essential element of school reform.

  3. That may be New York's version of reform. But let's not accept it.
