Bill Gates is the leading philanthrocapitalist, and he has many emulators — nowadays, having your own policy-oriented think tank is a far more effective status symbol among the super-rich than the mere conspicuous consumption of yachts or private jets. -- NYT, "Plutocrats vs. Populists"
Regarding Bill Gates and his wannabes: they have their yachts and private jets too - those aren't going away as status symbol anytime soon. It's just that it costs a lot more to buy the DOE than it does to buy a measly yacht or two. And just how many yachts could one person possibly buy anyway? When you're sitting on billions, you need something flashier.
Why did Arne give millions in federal grants in Sept 2013 to TfA (over $8 million) and the Milken boys (over $2 million) to train teachers & principals? He froze new IES grants to public universities in June 2013 due to the sequester.
