I can't wait to get my copy of
Mike Rose's latest book,
Why School? Reclaiming Education for All of Us. I've ordered it, having thoroughly enjoyed his previous works,
Lives on the Boundary: The Struggles and Achievement of America’s Underprepared, and Possible Lives: The Promise of Education in America, and having used them both in my classes.
In this
Edweek interview, educator, author Rose, who teaches at UCLA, gets to say a little about the purposes of education in a democracy:
...we’ve defined the purpose of schooling almost solely in economic terms and we’ve measured success with a score on a standardized test. There has to be a better way."
Mike also
blogs here.
Mine arrived in the mail yesterday and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.
