Want to know how L.A.'s incoming supt. John Deasy (the man from Gates) is going to sort good teachers from bad? How he's going to decide who gets fired and who stays? Who has their careers destroyed? Who will get paid? How much?
It's all right here:
y = Xβ + Zv + ε where β is a p-by-1 vector of fixed effects; X is an n-by-p matrix; v is a q-by-1 vector of random effects; Z is an n-by-q matrix; E(v) = 0, Var(v) = G; E(ε) = 0, Var(ε) = R; Cov(v,ε) = 0. V = Var(y) = Var(y - Xβ) = Var(Zv + ε) = ZGZT + R.
What's the formula for deciding good superintendents?
ReplyDeleteWatanabe sauce. Mike, hasn't the L.A. Teachers Union called for a boycott of the Times? Would you consider breaking these links in solidarity with them?
ReplyDeleteThen how would I read the quotes in the Times from the union leadership?
ReplyDeleteSuit yourself.
ReplyDeleteIt's not about suiting myself, Matt. I don't subscribe to the Times and wouldn't buy a copy on the street. But UTLA feeds them comments daily, both Duffy and the new leadership. So I assume they've dropped their boycott for some reason. Since the union uses the Times to spread its message, we bloggers have no choice but to read it online and then criticize it when called for. Did you read today's article re. the value-added formula?
ReplyDeleteYou make one good point though, Matt. There is no need for me to carry the LAT link. So I took it down. Thanks for pointing that out.
ReplyDeleteI looked at that crazy formula. UTLA has to do what thinks fit, they're on the ground. But I understand that the V+ scores the timey times published online are still up there. Rigoberto Ruleas Jr. and all that. Things might have changed, but I doubt it. It would be nice, but I've been trying to open that clam for four years; re the exploitation of the 1947 Elizabeth Short murder.
ReplyDeleteI thought that was the old L.A. Examiner I once worked for.
ReplyDeleteNo kidding? I was child labor for the Long Beach Independent.
